Christopher’s Handyman Service recently completed a small bathroom remodel in Lansing that turned a cramped, outdated space into a bright, efficient retreat. The project addressed worn fixtures, water damage and poor layout to create a modern bathroom the homeowner loves.
Project Overview
The existing bathroom measured just 5 by 7 feet and suffered from cracked floor tile, peeling paint, a leaky vanity and inadequate lighting. Limited storage and a dated color scheme made the room feel smaller than it was. Our goal was to maximize functionality, improve moisture protection and introduce contemporary finishes—all within a tight footprint and a one-week timeline.

Design Goals
We worked with the homeowner to define key objectives:• a floating vanity with built-in storage to clear floor space• large-format porcelain tile to reduce grout lines and visually expand the room• an alcove shower with frameless glass to eliminate bulk from a tub enclosure• energy-efficient LED lighting and a low-profile exhaust fan to control humidity• moisture-resistant wall panels around the shower to simplify cleaning
Preparation and Demolition
On day one, Christopher protected adjoining rooms with zip-wall dust barriers and covered floors in the hallway. The old vanity, mirror, lighting, floor tile and shower surround were removed. He inspected the subfloor and wall studs, replacing any mold-damaged drywall and reinforcing framing around the new shower curb.

Installation
Over the next three days the team:• installed CBU cement board on walls and floor, sealed all seams with waterproof tape and thinset mortar• set 12×24 porcelain floor tile on a diagonal pattern, grout color selected to match the vanity finish• framed and installed a custom floating vanity with soft-close drawers, quartz countertop and undermount sink• roughed in plumbing for a single-handle faucet, pop-up drain and new P-trap configuration• tiled the shower walls with full-height moisture-resistant panels and added a recessed niche for toiletries• installed a frameless glass shower door with polished chrome hardware
Finishing Touches
On day five the team:• painted the ceiling and remaining walls with mold-inhibiting, low-VOC paint in a light gray• fitted a sleek LED vanity mirror with integrated dimmable lighting• mounted an energy-efficient exhaust fan with humidity sensor to prevent mold• added chrome towel bars, a toilet paper holder and a glass shelf above the toilet
